Kompang is a kind of traditional music instrument. It is in the group of percussion instrument. Malayan people treat it as a popular traditional music instrument. It began to be a popular music instrument in hundred years ago. Kompang usually made from goat’s skin. It is originally from Egypt which was brought to Malayan land by Moslem Indian in the 13th century. Through Java, it was brought by the Egyptian trader.
Kompang has rattan in the back body between the skin and the wood frame. The function is to strengthen the voice result. Rattan was used in the past time. Now, as the new era comes and offers the practise material, the maker of this device chooses plastic to replace the rattan. The size is usually 16 inches and can be carried by the player.
Kompang is played by hitting the surface by fingers. It is usually played in traditional ceremonies. The voice result will be like conga. But the voices can be different depends on the area hitting and the hand’s position. The bass voice or rather like ‘dum’ can be resulted my hitting the middle part. The voice ‘tak’ or ‘pak’ can be got from hitting the edge part with fingers.
